M204 Multiprotocol PCMCIA Print Server

Microplex Systems Ltd.

The M204 is the first multiprotocol multiport print server to utilizePCMCIA technology. To provide maximum flexibility, the M204 has twobuilt-in Type II PCMCIA slots which can be used with any combination ofPCMCIA cards. The initial M204 firmware will support Token Ring andEthernet cards, which enables connection to one or more of these networksat the same time. When customers need change, the M204 can easily adaptto other network technologies as simply as plugging in a different PCMCIAcard. The M204 supports TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBIOS tunneling over TCP/IPsimultaneously. UNIX systems, Novell LANs, Windows NT workstations,Windows For Workgroups, or any systems supporting TCP/IP can share up to4 printers per unit. The M204's high performance (275,+ cps)bidirectional parallel ports can keep up with even the fastest printers. The dual serial ports can connect to printers or allow terminals toaccess and establish login sessions with UNIX systems. The M204 provides 8 virtual printer destinations which can perform autoASCII to PostScript conversion, auto-sensing and switching to desiredemulation mode, font, pitch, and tray selection. Its load-balancingfeature distributes print jobs to the shortest queue. Page counting andlogging permits departments to keep track of usage and individual printerexpenses. Multilevel password security and encryption, user lists, anddata scrambling ensure that LAN managers can control access to networkeddevices. Extensive printer status monitoring and management via SNMP,SMTP email, back-channeling, and syslogd provide error conditions, queueinformation, percentage of print job completed, and other details usefulfor troubleshooting, minimizing downtime, and maintaining efficientnetworking printing. With Flash memory, the M204 can be easily upgraded, and it comes with a 10Base2 AUI network interface for connecting to LANsrunning thick-wire or fiber optic cabling.
